Police Officer Support Scheme

March 17, 2025

On 1 October 2024, the Police Amendment (Police Officer Support Scheme) Act 2024 was enacted.

Consequently, the ‘Enhanced Police Support Scheme’ (EPSS) has replaced the former Police Ribbon Insurance Scheme (PBRI). For police officers who have suffered an injury prior to 1 October 2024 the PBRI will remain in effect.

NSW Police Officers play a critical role in our society, however unfortunately police officers face a greater risk of suffering a physical or psychological injury as a result of their duties. It is therefore important that police officers have the correct insurance in place.

What are my entitlements under the Enhanced Police Officer Support Scheme?

Can I still make a Total Permanent Disability claim?

TPD insurance provides a lump sum payment for workers who are permanently disabled and unable to return to work in their previous role or any role.

Under the EPSS, police officers are no longer entitled to a Total Permanent and Disability (TPD) lump sum payment offered by their superannuation fund.

Under the new EPSS scheme, instead of a TPD lump sum payment, in addition to the maximum 7 years weekly payments, permanently incapacitated or catastrophically injured police officers will be entitled to a further 3 years of weekly payments at the same rate, being 75% of your salary.
