FAQs

A Child Support Agreement is a written agreement between parents about the financial support of their children. There are two main types: a Registered Agreement, which is assessed by the Child Support Agency (CSA) and can be registered with them for enforcement, and a Limited Agreement, which is a private written agreement between parents that doesn’t involve the CSA’s assessment but can be registered in court. Both types, once properly made and registered, are legally binding.

For a Registered Agreement, the parents can agree on an amount that may or may not follow the CSA’s formula. For a Limited Agreement, the parents agree on an amount without a CSA assessment. When considering what is fair and reasonable, parents often take into account the CSA’s formula, which considers the income of both parents, the number of children, and their ages.

Yes, Child Support Agreements can be changed. For a Registered Agreement, parents can make a new agreement or apply to the CSA for a reassessment if there’s a significant change in circumstances. For a Limited Agreement, changes usually require a new agreement to be made and registered with the court.
